Head of the Yarra 2016 – by Coach Carter

SRC rowers and coaches headed en-masse to Melbourne last weekend for the 58th Head of the Yarra Regatta. The club fielded five eights with Leah Saunders and Kendall Brodie also representing in a composite boat in the Women’s Open eight who placed 2nd behind Melbourne University. The Masters started the regatta with a victory in the D Grade event, after a time penalty was reversed following a successful protest. This was a terrific performance from Steve Handley’s legends, especially after coming so close in 2014 and 2015. Special thanks must go to Stuart Johnston for fitting Yarra specific rudders on all of our boats to handle the sharp bends in the river.

With our Women’s program building we were very excited to be able to field a women’s eight.

We also had four more girls in the Mixed Eight. They came 13th out of 251 crews overall, beating two men’s open crews (including the UTS Men’s 2nd Eight by a minute), three men’s B crews, over 30 schoolboy Eights and every single female crew by a long margin.

Our Men’s Open Eight were the clear favourites to win the 8.6km time trial but unfortunately had to start behind the other crews. This left Milly with no space for overtaking as they had to paddle behind the line of Open Eights. The Men’s crew eventually caught up to a few of the Open Women’s Eights who were gridlocked under the last bridge before the finish. The Banks Women’s Crew had collided with the MUBC Women’s Eight and Banks were left motionless until the SRC Men’s crew offered to help by giving them a nudge towards the line.

The following crews competed in the regatta:

Men’s Masters D Eight

Men’s B Grade Eight

Women’s Open Eight

Mixed A Grade Eight

Men’s Open Eight

Congratulations to all who raced!

Rowers Turn Out for Reunion

Sydney turned on another stunning day to welcome members and visitors to the Rowers’ Reunion last Sunday. Guests gathered in the boat shed for refreshments before heading to the hardstand for a special scattering of Phil Cayzer’s Ashes. Phil’s two nephews joined President Keith Jameson on the Pontoon for the occasion as they each spread the ashes to a place where Phil spent such a large part of his life.

As is the tradition there were boats to be officially named after some of SRC’s most eminent members. Rio Olympians Alex Lloyd, Spencer Turrin and Chris Morgan. Australian representative Leah Saunders and long-term member and stalwart of the Master’s program – Roger Brighton. After a liberal splashing of Bubbly on the bows of the four pairs and the Quad/Four and some heartfelt words shared by the recipients, guests moved to the Wharfside Room for a delicious lunch.

Michael Morgan presented a surprise DVD remastered from 16mm film of various crews from around 1968, namely the SRC crew that won the Champion Eights, the NSW crew that won the King’s Cup and the 1968 Olympic Men’s eight. Many members of these crews were in attendance at Rowers’ Reunion on Sunday.

SRC’s Stars Celebrated at AGM

Sunday morning saw the 146th annual meeting take place at SRC which included the awarding of the coveted annual trophies to our best and brightest. We have had phenomenal  results on the water over the past year, and the AGM is also a time to pay homage to the many volunteers who help to make this club great.  We quote President Keith Jameson OAM. “The club was prominent at every level with many successes at the State and National Championships and with members selected in all National representative teams including the Olympic Games. The club won the point score at the National championships and with it the title of Champion Club of Australia”.

SRC Annual Dinner 10 September 2016

GUEST SPEAKERS: CHRIS MORGAN, ALEX LLOYD AND SPENCER TURRIN

Olympic years are special for SRC and to recognise the significance, we are changing the format of this year’s annual dinner to focus on welcoming home our returning Olympians. Chris, Spencer and Alex have just concluded a difficult campaign, that for each of them has been the focus of their lives for the past four years. They have had many twists and turns along the way before finally gaining selection to represent Australia at the 2016 Olympic Games, Rio de Janeiro. We look forward to hearing about their preparations for the Games and their participation at Rio. Attendees will be afforded the exciting opportunity to ask questions of the guest speakers.

We’re changing the format this year and invite guests to wear Black Tie, Australian Blazer or SRC Blazer.

Come along and give our latest Olympians a very warm welcome home.
