Kurt Spencer

Kurt first began rowing at Sydney Rowing Club when he was 15 years old, training with Mick Daffy, as part of our Sunday morning learn-to-row program. He was then coached by Phil Cayzer and went on to win two NSW Championships in the U17 and U19 single scull.

During this time, he attended Newington College where he rowed in the First Eight for his final three years, stroking it in his final year.

At a national level, Kurt has won a silver and a bronze medal in the U19 single, silver in the schoolboy single. He has also represented NSW in the Interstate Youth Eight in both 2008 and 2009.

Internationally, Kurt has won a bronze medal for Australia in the Junior Men’s Four, with fellow Sydney member Bede Clarke, at the 2006 World Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He then competed for Australia again the following year, teaming with Sydney Rowing Club members Alex Berzins and Matt Dignan in the Junior Men’s Four at the Chinese Olympic course in Beijing. The quad placed 5th in the final.

Kurt then went on to stroke the U23 Men’s Eight at the U23 World Rowing Championships, placing 1st in the B-final at the championships in Brandenburg, Germany.
